RIO DE JANEIRO, April 26 (Reuters) - Public prosecutors in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais have filed a lawsuit against AngloGold Ashanti (ANGJ.J) seeking 50 million reais ($9.91 million) in damages after the gold mining company allegedly withheld expert advice from authorities indicating a lack of stability in one of its dams, according to a document seen by Reuters. The lawsuit also asks for several additional safety measures and says that "twice in 2022 the defendant had robust technical studies, prepared by specialized consultants hired by the company, which indicated the absence of stability in the dam" in Nova Lima and that it chose not to publish them. "(AngloGold Ashanti) simply concealed the fact that they existed and, after trying to convince the consulting firm to change its mind about the dam's stability, it decided to change the team in charge of the service," the lawsuit said. In a request for comment, AngloGold Ashanti said it has not discharged wastewater or effluents into the Queiroz dams since December 2022 and that production at the unit's plants has been halted since then, but did not detail the reasons for stopping the discharge of wastewater. BRASILIA, April 5 (Reuters) - A Supreme Court judge backed a government move to crack down on illegal gold mining in Brazil, suspending a legal practice of buyers accepting the origin of the precious metal with paper receipts based on the "good faith" of the seller. The injunction by Justice Gilmar Mendes gave the government 90 days to adopt a new regulatory framework for the gold trade to stop the sale of gold mined illegally from indigenous lands and other environmentally protected areas. The previous government of President Jair Bolsonaro eased environmental protections and encouraged wildcat mining in the Amazon rainforest. A surge in illegal mining on the Yanomami indigenous reservation caused disease and malnutrition that led the Lula government to declare a humanitarian crisis. The Brazilian Institute of Mining (Ibram), which represents gold mining companies such as AngloGold Ashanti Ltd (ANGJ.J) and Yamana Gold Inc (YRI.TO), as well as multinational giants such as Vale (VALE3.SA), Rio Tinto Ltd (RIO.AX) and BHP Group Ltd (BHP.AX), said 20% of Brazilian gold had no declared origin in 2021, citing data from the National Mining Agency.
The South Africa-headquartered AngloGold and Gold Fields are among the five biggest gold producing companies by output in the world, with operations in Africa, Australia and South America. Gold Fields' Preece, who last month said the company was no longer pursuing big M&A deals after its failed bid for Canada's Yamana Gold (YRI.TO) said on the conference call "collaboration is easier". Gold Fields and AngloGold would own 60% and 30% of the joint operation, respectively, with the Ghanaian government holding 10%, Calderon said. "The proposed joint venture would create the largest gold mine in Africa and one of the largest in the world. Apart from Tarkwa, Gold Fields has two other mines in Ghana, Damang and the 45%-owned Asanko.
RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan 13 (Reuters) - Brazil's mining lobby group asked the country's foreign ministry to work with other governments to improve tactics used to combat the illegal gold trade, it said on Friday. "The trade of illegal gold feeds a criminal alliance in Brazil, which is responsible for part of the devastation we see in the Amazon rainforest, something the world is watching," said Raul Jungmann, president of the Ibram trade association, in a statement. Ibram represents mining giants such as Vale (VALE3.SA), Rio Tinto (RIO.AX), BHP as well as gold miners such as South Africa's AngloGold Ashanti (ANGJ.J) and Canada's Yamana Gold <YRI.TO. The lobby group called for the ministry to work with countries that buy illegally mined Brazilian gold, such as Switzerland, to "reduce the space" for illicit operators. It has pledged to stop deforestation in the Amazon, a vital biome whose health is considered vital in the fight against climate change.

ACCRA, Nov 25 (Reuters) - Ghana has ordered all large-scale mining companies to sell 20% of their entire stock of refined gold at their refineries to the Bank of Ghana from Jan. 1, 2023, Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia said on Facebook on Friday. All community mining schemes and licensed small-scale miners will also have to sell their gold to the government through PMMC from the same date onwards. "The gold to be purchased by the Bank of Ghana and the PMMC will be in cedis at spot price with no discounts," he added. However, Bank of Ghana Communications Officer Sam Opoku told Reuters he could not confirm or deny whether Bawumia's order was being considered. Gold miners Newmont Corp (NEM.N), Gold Fields Ltd (GFIJ.J), AngloGold Ashanti Ltd (ANGJ.J), Galiano Gold Inc (GAU.TO) and Asante Gold Corp (ASE.CD), all of which have gold mines in Ghana, did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment.
